The Object

Before a sofa gets built, before a chair gets upholstered, before a single cut is made — a designer touches the fabric. They hold it to the light. They lay two swatches side by side and see if the tones hold. They rub the material between their fingers and decide: this one.

The Linen & Leather Sample Book is a working tool disguised as a beautiful object. It contains 22 swatches — 12 Belgian and Italian linens, 10 full-grain and aniline leathers — drawn from the textile and upholstery lines we represent at De Sousa Hughes. Each swatch is generously sized (4 x 6 inches minimum), affixed to heavy card stock, and labeled with the mill, composition, and the designer line it's available through. The book itself is case-bound in natural linen with a leather spine — made to live on a design desk for years, not months.
